Metabolism Boosting Foods

Published by danaprince at 9:48 am under Diet Edit This

Many things can alter or slow down our metabolism. Getting older, reducing your lifestyle and eating certain foods can slow down the speed at which you burn off food. Here are some things you can eat and drink that can boost your metabolism:

  • Green tea
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Wulong also known as Oolong tea
  • grapefruit and grapefruit juice
  • coconut oil
  • spices

It’s also a good idea to get plenty of fluids and plenty of fiber which can also influence your body’s transit time. The transit time is how long it takes you to have a bowel movement and constipation can also slow down your metabolism so by eating fibrous foods and trying to get more than 20 grams of fiber a day into your diet this can help as well.

Many people try drinking green tea and oolong tea with meals as it they can help facilitate digestion and Apple Cider Vinegar helps your stomach process food with extra stomach acids.

It’s important to know that grapefruit can be contraindicated with some medications because it can vastly impact the way your body metabolises medication so it’s really important to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about whether or not medication you’re taking such as blood pressure drugs can be taken with grapefruit.

Organic coconut oil can also significantly boost your immune system so is a great addition to food as well as used as a cooking oil.

Some hot spices can also increase your metabolism for several hours after you’ve eaten them. Chili, mustard and cinnamon are known to do this.

The best way to increase your metabolism and get healthier is to choose to eat and drink healthful foods and some of the above foods and beverages can definitely lend a helping hand. Don’t forget to eat breakfast in the morning. Getting fuel after a long night of slumber tells your metabolism to wake up and get working. If you wait until noon to eat you’ve lost several prime hours of metabolizing.

I had no idea about grapefruit having possible interactions with certain medicines. Is there something specific to grapefruit, or is it just that any great metabolic change could possibly interfere with medications?

    Hi nchartman,
Grapefruit speeds up the rate of metabolization so in some prescription medications, they have a time release formula so that they break down at a specific rate. Because grapefruit can speed that up, it could actually cause an equivalent to overdose of the medication.
