In Praise of the Smoothie

May 7th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Ahh, the smoothie….a healthy drink that tastes better than a milkshake.  This is an excellent way to serve up things you need and want in your or your child’s diet as well as use up over ripened fruit in the house.

Making a smoothie

The basic smoothie recipe doesn’t need a store-bought mix and can be made with the following:

  • banana
  • milk or juice
  • yogurt

From there, you can add things you want as well as things you need. If you’re trying to incorporate extra healthy items in your diet but don’t love them on their own, consider blending them into your smoothie. Here are some add in options.

-Udo’s oil

-Flaxseed oil

-organic coconut oil

-Greens Plus

-Apple Cider  Vinegar

-Stool softener or bulking agent

-Fish oil

-Skim milk powder for extra calcium

-Weight gain shakes

A smoothie can be stocked full of fruit and yummy  and can fill you up as well as replace a meal. Some weight lifters bulk up their smoothie with extra calories and protein powders in order to gain weight.

For kids, a smoothie is a great treat and can help you get extra fruits and even vegetables into your child’s diet. For toddlers who don’t like drinking milk, blending it with yogurt and banana can make the transition to cow’s milk much easier and if you want to help your child gain weight or get additional calcium or nutrition you can add milk powder or toddler cereal mix to it.

Smoothie Tips

—————

  • Using probiotic yogurt in your smoothie or fruit shake can be extra beneficial as well.
  • Choose 1%, Skim milk, 2% or Homo depending on the needs of the person drinking it
  • Frozen fruit works just as well as fresh and can be used off season
  • blend with ice and juice in hot weather in lieu of milk

Experiment with flavour combinations and drink to your good health!
