Do you think you don’t have dust mites? You’re very likely wrong. Dust mites are ugly little microscopic arachnids that love living in humid conditions. You can’t see them but there are probably millions living in your mattress, in your rugs and in your pillow. Yuck! Luckily, they don’t bite and unless you have an allergy to dust mites, you might not really notice.
There are people who are more sensitive to dust mites than others and if you are living with them, you’ll want to do your best to minimize their existence and keep their population under control.
A mattress can triple in weight within a decade because of being filled with dust mites. Dust mites can cause an allergic reaction because their feces and their corpses are an irritant. They live off dead skin and hair and love moist environments. The best way to keep them under control is to:
- Keep your home from being too humid
- Vacuum and dust often
What else can you do?
You can get allergenic slip covers for sofas, beds and pillows and buy air purifiers for your home as well and you might want to remove old carpets. Clean with a vacuum that’s fitted with a hepa filter and don’t do the vacuuming in the bedrooms too close to bedtime because setting the dust airborne can increase allergic symptoms.
Another important factor is to clean filters on furnaces and air cleaners and vacuums. No filter at all is not nearly as bad for your respiratory health as a dirty filter! It’s not likely you’ll eradicate dust mite from your home completely but you can minimize their impact on your health.
