Preventing Rising Food Costs From Hurting Your Nutrition and Pocket

Published by danaprince at 9:32 am under Food, Healthy Living Edit This

People are buzzing about the increasing cost of food. Prices are going up and shortages are happening for specific staples in certain areas. What can you do? Here are some tips:

-Buy locally. Consider the 100 mile diet where you make your staple food items that come from local produce. Shop at your local markets and visit the local farmer’s market as well.

-Start a vegetable and herb garden. Even if you only have a balcony, you can do a garden and grow some of your own food.

-Fish/hunt. Fishing and hunting can cut your grocery bill by a big chunk. 1 deer can provide enough venison to feed your family for a long time and this is one of the healthiest meats for you. Check your local fishing guides to find out which fish are the best to eat in your area and be sure you don’t exceed recommendations for maximum consumption due to potential mercury or pollutants.

-read the package and find out where the food comes from and:

-Figure out what’s in your food and decide to try to eat food with 5 or fewer ingredients. Not only are you going to find that food that’s not as processed is more nutritional but it’s easier and cheaper to buy.

-Make it yourself. Bread costs are rising but you can make your own bread. You can also make many of the other items you spend a lot of money on as well.

What are some of your creative ideas for saving money on your grocery bill?
